What is Functional Skills English?

Functional Skills English is a qualification recognised by employers, colleges, and universities across England. Level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 (grade C) pass – the standard many employers and further education courses require. It covers reading, writing, and speaking and listening in everyday and workplace contexts. It is practical, relevant, and assessed against a nationally recognised standard.

Is it right for you?

  • You want to build your confidence and accuracy in reading, writing, or spoken English in a structured, supportive environment.
  • You need a nationally recognised English qualification – at Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1, or Level 2 – for employment, further study, an apprenticeship, or professional registration.
  • You have a working level of English but have not yet achieved a formal qualification.
  • You are returning to work or education after a break and want a recognised English qualification to support your next step.
  • You are preparing for IELTS or another qualification and want to strengthen your English foundations first.
