Pre-Entry

What it means: Very little or no English

What you'll be doing: Learning basic words and phrases for everyday life

Suitable if: You arrived in the UK recently and have minimal English

Entry 1

What it means: Some basic English words and phrases

What you'll be doing: Building simple sentences; understanding common signs and instructions

Suitable if: You can say hello and some everyday phrases but struggle with full sentences

What it means: Simple everyday English

What you'll be doing: Having basic conversations; understanding simple written text

Suitable if: You can manage basic conversations but find anything formal or written difficult

Entry 3

What it means: Everyday English in familiar situations

What you'll be doing: Communicating in most daily situations; reading simple text

Suitable if: You manage day-to-day life in English but find work or formal situations hard

What it means: Good everyday English

What you'll be doing: Communicating clearly in work and community settings; reading and writing at work standard

Suitable if: You can communicate well but want to improve for employment or further study

What it means: Confident English in most situations

What you'll be doing: Communicating professionally; preparing for IELTS, SELT, or further qualification

Suitable if: You have strong English and want a formal qualification or professional progression
